Metcalf Tree Service, Inc. has proudly served the Charlottesville area since 1982. Founded by Shawn Metcalf, who began landscaping at just 13 years old, the company quickly grew into a trusted name for expert tree services. As a teenager, Shawn developed a passion for arboriculture, shifting his focus from landscaping to trees—a calling that became the foundation of Metcalf Tree Service, Inc.
Specializing in the removal of large, dead, and hazardous trees, Metcalf Tree Service is known not only for its professionalism and expertise, but also for its commitment to community service. One initiative that truly sets the company apart is the Start a Spark program—an outreach effort that provides free firewood to families in need of heat during the winter.
The idea for Start a Spark began more than 20 years ago, when Shawn and his wife Kelley recognized an opportunity to use excess wood from their business to help others. What started as a simple gesture has grown into a robust community effort, fueled by dedicated volunteers and a shared mission: to bring warmth to Central Virginia families who are struggling to heat their homes.
Through load-and-delivery events, Start a Spark not only provides essential firewood but also brings the community together in meaningful ways—offering volunteers the chance to directly impact lives through acts of service and compassion.
Giving back is deeply rooted in the Metcalf family’s values, particularly when it comes to honoring and supporting veterans. Though Shawn and Kelley did not serve in the military themselves, their connection to service runs deep. With veterans on both sides of their family—including Shawn’s and Kelley’s fathers, Kelley’s two grandfathers (one a Pearl Harbor survivor), her brother, their son, uncle, sister-in-law, and son-in-law—the Metcalfs understand the sacrifices made by those who serve. Their gratitude is expressed not just in words, but in consistent support of veteran causes in their community.
Shawn and Kelley have been married for nearly 28 years and are proud parents of four children and grandparents to three. When they’re not working or giving back through Start a Spark, you’ll likely find them in the mountains of North Carolina—relaxing by a creek, casting a line for trout, and enjoying the simple joy of quality time with family.
