“The Freedom Fund” is proud to announce Douglas Cox as the July 2020, “Friend of Freedom” award winner.

Doug Cox has a true passion for our military and he “comes by it naturally”.   His father and five uncles served in World War II.  His brother served in the Army from 1965 – 1968 and his son-in-law is active duty Army and is a recipient of the Purple Heart while serving in Afghanistan.

Following his brother who was on staff at the UVA Medical Center, Doug moved to Charlottesville in 1982 and opened his highly successful chiropractic office in March of that year.  In his office Doug treats all ages, but he especially enjoys working with adults and most importantly patients that are veterans of the U.S. military.  Doug has served as the local Chiropractor and Acupuncturist for the Veteran’s Administration for the past 5 years, helping vets in both Richmond and the Charlottesville VA Center.

Doug serves veterans “out of respect for what they give”.  For the past 5 years he’s been a donor to the “Freedom 5K” Run that benefits local vets.  He also supports the UVA ROTC Run which raises scholarship money for aspiring ROTC cadets and midshipman.  Every March for the past 8 years, he’s donated a portion of each patient’s office visit fees to local organizations supporting vets.  Using his entrepreneurial talents, Doug developed a “Hero Honey” program where he donates money from honey he produces to Virginia Veterans.  Last year he sold 192 jars of honey to raise almost $4,000!

Doug has many civic interests as well, serving on boards for Habitat for Humanity, the UVA Heart Valve Board and recently the State Board of Family Service of Virginia Veterans.  He was very active in the Jaycees, Rotary and the Virginia Chiropractic board including serving as the President in 1999-2000.  Doug has been happily married to his wife Jayne for 38 years and they have 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren.

For all Doug does for our local active duty military, veterans, and their families, he is the July Gratitude Charlottesville Friend of Freedom Award winner.

Each month, “The Freedom Fund”  Board of Directors will chose a FOF award winner to be featured on Gratitudecville.com.  Winners will get a trophy and sometimes a monetary award.  To nominate person or organization that promotes and protects freedom in our community, email us at gratitudecville@gmail.com.
